Drink More Water Because It's Good For You--An Individual Approach
79The whole discussion of drinking more water -for me- came in three different varieties, one from my husband who is always asking me if I drank enough and second, my mom is always talking about the benefits of drinking it before you go to bed and as soon as you wake up in the morning, and third, while I was over at my girlfriends house she showed me her phone app that kept her abreast of her water intake.
Her phone actually makes a water pouring sound when it's time for her to drink another glass. Technology is amazing but this really amazed me-- an app that helps you to drink more water!!! So off I went to pick up my iphone and find for myself an app that would help me do the same thing. I found it and downloaded the free version immediately. The app also grades your progress and gives you tips! (check out the screen shots to the right)
I decided to challenge myself to drink the eight glasses that are recommended for my body weight for the day. The first day I struggled by getting through a couple of glasses and the second I did a whole lot better by drinking seven and today as I write these words, I am on my third glass for the day.
I really have to say that I feel a big difference this afternoon. I have more energy and don't feel as cranky. In retrospect I realize that in most cases when my body has felt out of balance it was because I was dehydrated. Slow moving heaviness and irritability can be tell tale signs that you are headed toward being dehydrated. I've learned so much in the past couple of days regarding drinking enough water and the benefits of drinking more. It really isn't enough to drink a bit here and there, I know as I get older I have to take better care of myself and drinking water is an intrinsic part of it.
"Water makes up more than half of your body weight and a person can't survive for more than a few days without it." Everyone pretty much knows this fact and even though I know this I have still avoided keeping myself hydrated on a regular basis until three days ago!
I read a plethora of articles and found a lot of the same information included but there were a few things that stood out that I didn't really know before: 1) that sometimes when you feel hungry it just means that you might be dehydrated so you should drink a glass of water before you eat, it's not always that you are hungry! 2) I'm always having stomach aches and this is due to not drinking enough water, our digestive systems need a good amount of water to digest food properly. Eureka!!! my stomach feels really good now!!
One of the best benefits of drinking more water comes by way of my five year old copying everything I do and drinking more water herself!!
In the end I believe doing the research and actually drinking water everyday is something that is an individual process, finding the balance and what works best for you is what is important!!
I plan to continue to drink the stuff of the God's and share my water drinking journey with anyone who is willing to listen!
DRINK UP!! CHEERS!
My Choice of Filtered Water
I use the Brita water filtration system, I find the water to actually taste better than bottled water-- for me-- and of course it helps to save our environment. I also prefer to drink it room temperature.

I also prefer drinking filtered water since we have a water filter at home. I bought mine from http://waterfilters.mercola.com/drinking-water-fil I believe that it's more secured than consuming bottled water.
Thanks for this post. I added the app but about a week ago and have yet to get an A. lol. I'll keep trying
Great hub! In the past few years, since I have had my kids, I have increased my water intake . It really does make a difference in overall health. I notice the difference when I don't drink enough. To remember, I just keep a large water cup filled all day long, and each time I visit the kitchen to feed the kids or to cook/clean, I drink some and refill it. I usually drink close to 3L a day! Thanks for sharing your experience! :)
Thanks Karen! A great hub. I try daily to drink plenty of water and avoid drinks high in caffeine, it usually is a daily battle. I find it difficult to drink more than a few glasses a day, but even with a few glasses I can see the difference it makes to my concentration and energy levels! Thanks again!
I totally agree with your article. I have long been a water drinker but it is easy to lapse. It does make one feel better. I hope that phone app helps! :D
Very interesting hub and advice that I do need to act on as I don't drink nearly enough water. But isn't it amazing how often you can find an excuse to put things off till the next day? Not this time, I've started now. Many thanks for sharing.
Hi Karen! This hub came to me at the right time! I am getting my water intake up and cutting back on the sugary beverages. I am feeling better already! Voted up, up and away!
I try so hard to keep my water intake up - you are so right it makes a huge impact on your health and beauty! It is so easy during the summer to get dehydrated and unfortunately one of the very last signs is thirst. Also -great that you pointed out the kids are watching, learning and doing:).
